High Voltage Insulation Systems In Aerospace & Automotive Applications

Join our in person training course on the 13th of October in Warrendale, PA (USA) to learn more about the design of safe insulation systems for use in aerospace and automotive applications.

Enrolling on this course will give you three-months access to our online courses focused on clearances, creepage distances, solid insulation, cables & connectors and high voltage testing. You will also be able to attend the full-day in-person course with the chance to network with other engineers involved in the development of high voltage systems.

Course Syllabus

This course is intended for engineers who are involved in the design of high voltage systems used in aerospace and automotive applications. The course will describe the challenges that must be overcome when designing such systems and the way testing can be used to deliver reliable yet compact electrical systems.

High Voltage Basics

Explaining the ways in which high voltage systems can fail (including through disruptive discharge, partial discharge and tracking)

Electrical Clearances & Creepage Distances

How do you select safe clearances and creepage distances? Are the existing standards fit for purpose?

Solid Insulation Systems

How does the performance of solid insulation change depending on the nature of the voltage applied to it and the environment? What thickness is needed to avoid partial discharge?

Power Electronics & Machines

What special considerations are needed when selecting insulation systems for use in a power electronic converter / machine.

High Voltage Testing

How do we use high voltage testing to ensure that insulation systems are safe and reliable over their lifetime? What are the advantages of different test techniques?

Venue, Pricing & Trainer

The course will be held in Warrendale, PA (USA), a venue easily accessibly from Pittsburgh Airport. The SAE AE10 High Voltage committee will be meeting at this location later in the week and if you have interest in the work of this committee you are encouraged to visit this website to find out more.

The course price will depend on the number of delegates registered but is expected to not exceed $1000 for the day course (including lunch and access to our online training in advance of the in person event).
The course trainer will be Ian Cotton, the Technical Director of aHV. Ian has worked extensively on the design and test of higher voltage products being used in existing and future aircraft / automotive systems including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 and E Fan X that was targeted to operate at 3kV. He is a member of both European and US Standards Committees writing guidance for companies involved in the design of high voltage systems.
